Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela and Joe Slovo were great friends and comrades. From the mid 1940’s when they were in the same class studying law at Wits University. Even whilst Joe was in exile and Nelson was in prison they remained close. Some say that it was Joe who held the ANC together during those years whilst the ANC was in exile and Mandela was in prison. Finally, on the evening of Joe’s death, Mandela was Joe’s last visitor, who holding his hand, talked quietly together. When the time came for him to go, Mandela leant forward, his cheek touching Joe’s forehead, as he said goodbye. in reply Joe’s farewell to his old friend: “Cheers.”
