On Monday January 6th, 2020, South Africans, Africans and Human Rights Activists around the world will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the death of Comrade Joe Slovo. To mark the occasion there will be a commemoration ceremony at the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto, Johannesburg at Slovo’s gravesite, starting at 10am. Representatives of the Alliance, including the SACP, the ANC, Cosatu, Sanco, The YCL the family of Joe Slovo and the Joe Slovo Foundation will deliver messages of support.

Slovo was an outstanding liberation and social emancipation leader, he served the oppressed and exploited in various capacities including in the second world war fighting against the forces of fascism. Later Slovo served as one of the two founding Commanders of the joint SACP-ANC military wing uMkhonto we Siswe (MK) along with Cde Nelson Mandela – he also served as its chief of staff. Slovo was a true internationalist championing the causes of the oppressed, the exploited the working class and the poor not just in South Africa but in Africa as a whole and throughout the world Slovo contributed in breaking the deadlock in the 1990’s during the negotiations for South Africa’s democratic transition and became South Africa’s first minister of Housing under President Mandela until his untimely death 25 years ago
