Up to 70% of women and Girls in South Africa experience Verbal, Physical and /or Sexual Violence including Rape. Through education, awareness raising, creative campaigns, preventative programs, partnerships, advocates and ambassadors the White Ribbon Campaign provides the tools and programs for men to engage other men to stop this violence against women and girls in their homes, communities, workplaces, schools, varsities and beyond.
The Economist says Gender Based Violence has reached epidemic proportions in South Africa.
Some national studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime including Rape. In one survey a 1/3rd of men of men admitted to having used force or threats against women – often to obtain sex.
Statistics South Africa reported that the murder rate for women increased drastically by 117% between 2015 and 2017.
The White Ribbon Campaign in South Africa is working towards eliminating this by providing workshops and classes in workplaces, schools, sports, clubs, trade unions and local communities that are designed to develop a better understanding about the root causes of gender-based violence and ways male-identified individuals can prevent it. The White Ribbon Campaign introducing approaches to build a network of ambassadors and advocates to challenge male violence and abuse against women and girls, intervening when violence and abuse occurs, and being positive role models to other men and boys.
Long term through education, awareness-raising, outreach, technical assistance, capacity building, partnerships and rule changes using the White Ribbon’s Global programmes will challenge the negative, outdated concepts of manhood and inspire South African men to understand and embrace the incredible potential they have to be a part of positive change. eliminating Gender Based Violence & Sexual Harassment from the Home, School, Workplace and Community
